  • Hi All, I'm trying to find a book, but with no success, so I thought I would turn to the mass-genius of Google Answers. Unfortunately, I can't remember the author or the name, but it was definitely blue. Only joking, about the blue anyway. It's a book I read a while ago and it popped into my head for some reason today. It's a novel about an American messianic type cult with a charismatic leader, who eventually end up taking over a US state. There were 2 books in the series, and I think the second book is about his newly created "state". I'm pretty sure the main character was called something like Adam Smith or Jeremiah Smith or something like that... Any ideas? Cheers! dino

  • What would be your best guess of the year in which you first encountered the book(s)?

  • Awesome! That's it! Cheers!

  • Whilst that particular book does sound interesting, the one I am after is definitely set on Earth, and in contemporary times. As far as I recall, the first book is about the rise of the cult and the second is about the fate of the newly created independent state. Thanks anyway!

  • A very good point, my apologies for not including that in the original request. I first encountered this book in Peckham Library, SE London, around about 2002/2003 and it was in paperback format. I seem to recall that it had been published within the last couple of years prior to that, as I was in a bit of a "recent books only" phase at that time. The reason I don't just zoom down to the lovely Peckham Library and check for myself is that I'm now in Arlington, VA! Oh, and the author, as far as I recall, is American. Cheers Again! dino

  • Does this sound like the book? "'The Fear of God' is the second book in the Dr. Jaguar Addams series. In a penal colony modeled after Toronto, Canada, after an epidemic of serial murders called The Killing Times, Jaguar uses empathic skills to find the root of criminals' fears. This time she must use a virtual simulation of Heaven in order to find the source of a female cult leader's fear before the dispersed cult tries to bring about an apocalypse through particularly frightening methods..." http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0441006221/102-5235320-4010502?v=glance&n=283155 Best regards, Rainbow

  • I believe you're thinking of Jeremiah: Terrorist Prophet and New America by Michael A. Smith Jeremiah: Terrorist Prophet Booklist Review: In this offering of the terrorist-at-large thriller, Smith throws in every element popular with readers: smuggled nuclear bombs, biological weapon attacks, conventional bomb attacks, glamorous TV anchors, tenacious FBI agents, and a nefarious, fanatical genius who orchestrates the mayhem. Jeremiah claims to have received from God a second book of Jeremiah, and vows to impose its injunctions to create a puritanical, all-white America via a purge of criminals, the federal government, Wall Street, and blacks. A media-savvy guy, Jeremiah videotapes his vigilante murders and sends them to Laura Delaney, host of a popular TV magazine. Taking the bait, Delaney becomes Jeremiah's megaphone for a series of terrorizing attacks, culminating in his bringing an ex-Soviet nuke to Washington. All the while, FBI guy Steve Wallace edges ever closer to the prophet whose abilities of elusion equal his efficiency in destruction. The result is cartoon-style Schwarzeneggerian action that will be advertised in all the newspaper book-review sections. Requests are unavoidable. ((Reviewed April 1, 1997)) -- Gilbert Taylor New America Booklist Review: This sequel to Jeremiah: Terrorist Prophet (1998) continues the frenetic struggle against the self-proclaimed prophet and leader of a separatist movement. Laura Delaney, a beautiful former television reporter, and her husband, Steve Wallace, former FBI agent, are recovering from their previous encounter with Jeremiah, who is obsessed with Laura. Jeremiah, the nephew of a renowned fascist, turns biblical and democratic principles on their heads. Laura and Steve's relative peace is broken when Jeremiah rapes Laura, kidnaps her, and takes her back to New America (his separatist colony in the Midwest) to give birth to his heir. Working with an unofficial corps of government agents, Steve rejoins the effort to kill Jeremiah and destroy his maverick nation. The president, vice-president, congressmen, and military leaders clash on how to handle the separatist threat as suspicions are raised about everyone's motives and loyalties. Lovers of conspiracy theories will enjoy this fast-paced novel.
