Can someone please explain how a 7th chord works?

For example, the chord C7 is played C, E, G and Bflat. But CMAJ7 is played C, E, G and B. Can someone explain how it works so I understand when to use Bflat and when to use just B. Not the easiest thing to understand, but the C7 chord is used mostly as the dominant (5 chord) in the key of F, hence the Bb. This dominant relationship makes music move naturally and also establishes to the ear what key you are in by the way it resolves. So... the addition of a color tone like a 6th or 7th depends on what it goes to or progresses to as well as what key you are in. Hope that helps
  • If it says Maj 7, then play the B natural, or whatever the appropriate note is. That means there will be an interval of a major 7th between the root of the chord and the note a 7th above.

If it simply says 7, play the B flat. And actually, in the scale of F major, the note a 7th above C is B flat. But people have got in the habit of calling chords with flatted 7ths simply a 7th chord.
