Can someone please explain how a 7th chord works?
For example, the chord C7 is played C, E, G and Bflat. But CMAJ7 is played C, E, G and B. Can someone explain how it works so I understand when to use Bflat and when to use just B. Not the easiest thing to understand, but the C7 chord is used mostly as the dominant (5 chord) in the key of F, hence the Bb. This dominant relationship makes music move naturally and also establishes to the ear what key you are in by the way it resolves. So... the addition of a color tone like a 6th or 7th depends on what it goes to or progresses to as well as what key you are in. Hope that helpsIf it simply says 7, play the B flat. And actually, in the scale of F major, the note a 7th above C is B flat. But people have got in the habit of calling chords with flatted 7ths simply a 7th chord.
