The definition of environmental sustainability for the human condition is: "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
I was wondering if there are studies on the long-term sustainability of current life expectancy and child mortality rate in the US and the toll in earth's resources consumption to keep them the way they are.
Current data is in the US: Life Expectancy over 70 years, child mortality rate is less than 10 deaths before age of 5 per 1000 live births (these numbers may not be accurate, but they are close enough).I think a longer life expectancy actually has decreased the human condition. Though the life expectancy has gone up, little has been done to increase the quality of life for people as they grow older. Long ago, if you lived to the age of 60 you were considered very old. Now you would be 100+ to be put in the same category. When life expectancy was relatively short, people functioned as highly productive individuals right up until they got sick and shortly thereafter died. Now, with modern science, most disease has been controlled or eliminated and any new disease is quickly being researched in order to do the same. What is the result? Quality of life is plummeting. People are told they have to work at greater ages though they are much less productive than the new workforce that hits the market each year. Those that make it past retirement age usually end up withering away as a relatively useless member of society. They just hope that the money they may have saved lasts them to the time they die. Many have to waist away in bed, taking numerous medications to fight pain and old age from killing them while on machines to keep them alive, and when their body fails, someone comes along and revives them so they have to suffer longer. What do you think about their "human condition" sound quite inhuman if you ask me. No wonder there has been such an outcry for supporters of euthanasia.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
