What is the basis of the big bounce theory (not big bang)?

  • I too read the article about the Big Bounce Theory in the Scientific American issue not too long ago. It is a very fascinating theory. Like the "Big Crunch", it's a variation of the end of our universe in accordance to the Big Bang theory.

Most of the evidence supporting it is mathematical, with certainly no observational evidence to support it. It is really an attempt to get the Big Bang theory to come in accordance to quantum mechanics.

  • The Big Bounce is a variant of the Big Bang. It says that Big Bangs eventually reverse themselves and recollapse. At the point of maximum collapse, quantum effects create another rexpansion and another Big Bang.

This is quite an old theory ---- invented by the great Soviet physicist Y. A. Zel'dovich over 30 years ago, and then abandoned by him as incorrect.

There really is no evidence for a Big Bounce. It is not needed to supply the material to make a Big Bang. Recently, however, it has been suggested that a Big Bounce is a natural consequence of some unproven theories of physics.

  • The reason the big bounce is on this month's magazine is because our conventions constantly change according to fact theory.

  • i didnt know there was one

  • If you are referring to the theory that the universe expands ands shrinks and expands again in cycles, there is none. Images from the Hubble Space Telescope and others, as well as some research involving Dark Matter, have demonstrated the the universe is in fact accelerating outward, not decelerating, as would be necessary.

  • Within the Big Bang theory there were, until 1998, three ideas on how the Universe would proceed. First, is the big bounce. Here, there is the initial explosion (expansion), but the mutual gravity of everything is stronger than the kinetic energy of everything moving apart. Things would slow down to a stop, and reverse, eventually leading to a "big crunch" or as some said, a "gnab gib" (which is Big Bang spelled backwards - really clever). This new hot dense Universe would then expand again, as if it bounced.

The next idea was that the kinetic energy was higher, and the Universe would expand forever, slowing, but never stopping.

The most likely idea seemed to be that the kinetic energy was exactly the same as that of the gravitational energy - that is, the Universe would expand, slowing, but never quite slowing to a stop.

But in 1998, astronomers announced that they'd been looking at distant type 1a supernovae and discovered that the Universe wasn't slowing down. It was speeding up. This is not one of the 3 Friedman models. Something must be pushing stuff apart - they called this Dark Energy. This caught everyone by surprise with their pants down, which is where they are now.
